our mission

In solidarity with historic and emerging frontline leadership on technology issues:
Suma is a nonprofit in Portland that creates platforms for digital organizing, enterprise and justice. We imagine and build an inclusive technology future with and for low-income people and people of color (“frontline communities”). We believe that responsive technology investments and institutions can build community power to address climate change, poverty and racial injustice.

how we started

Suma began as a program within Verde, a Portland-based nonprofit that strengthens frontline communities preparedness for the impacts of climate change through environmentally resilient solutions.

Through this work came a recurring challenge: frontline communities lacked access to digital tools, preventing them from accessing solutions.

Suma was created to address the digital divide–connecting communities to sustainable goods, services and opportunities through technology.

Damien Hall | Land use attorney, active in affordable housing and renewable energy.
